Elephant garlic is as big as a tennis ball

Sainsbury’s will start offering shoppers Elephant garlic this month.

The bulb, which was first introduced to UK consumers in the late 1990s, is a close relative of leeks and can grow to 90mm in diameter with each head weighing up to 500g. It is characterised by a milder, sweeter flavour than smaller varieties.

Sainsbury’s supplies of the giant allium come from Argentina and the US and the store says it can even be eaten raw.

"The introduction of different types of food and cooking over the last decade has meant our customers are using more and more garlic," said the store’s buyer Russell Crowe. "We now stock a range of different varieties of garlic but think that Elephant Garlic will be the biggest news yet for garlic-lovers."

Consmuption of garlic in the UK has reached an all-time high of 3,500 tonnes last year and sales have seen year on year increases of approximately 15 per cent over the last decade.
