The Egyptian Producers Consortium (EPC) has invested in a state-of-the-art packhouse in the Monofin area, ready in time for the new season.
The site, which has a new packhouse, coldstore and pre-cooling tunnels, can handle 300 tonnes of potatoes a day, at full capacity.
It has also achieved GlobalGAP and Tesco’s Nature’s Choice accreditation.
The first arrivals of Egyptian Nicola potatoes hit the UK on January 12.
EPC managing director Dr Ihab Tadros said: “The Egyptian share of the new potato market is higher than it has been in previous years, after outbreaks of brown rot in Egyptian product. But the problem has been resolved and trust is growing again.
“Our main market has always been the UK and we are taking it a challenge to get our market share back.”
