Punters at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park might have been forgiven for feeling a little anxious this year, as a menacing life-sized dragon presided over the show.

The award-winning ‘Chinese Dragon’ display was created by the north-west group of the British Protected Ornamentals Association, who won a gold medal for the fifth consecutive year.

The display was sponsored by Scotts, who donated 250 bags of Levington M2 compost to produce the plants for the scheme, and Levington B2 compost to plant up the dragon.

Derek Smith, who created the dragon, spoke about the work the group put into creating the dragon: “It took a tremendous amount of dedicated work from members of the group. The shape was scaled up from a toy and then a framework made with hundreds of welded re-enforced wires.

“The dragon was filled with B2 compost and then planted up in small squares. This was a slow process and the selection of planting material was crucial in obtaining the desired results. The dragon was constructed in several sections and the head alone weighed over 300kg.”

Scotts’ Derek Hampson added: “We were delighted to support the group again and congratulations to them on the most stunning display.”
