Avocado production in the Dominican Republic is expected to increase by up to 10 per cent in 2001 to around 14,000 tonnes now that crops have fully recovered from the effects of Hurricane Georges. Of this, the domestic market will consume around 40 per cent, with the remainder exported. According to the USDA, 95 per cent of sendings are bound for the United States, with the balance largely sent to Belgium/Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the Caribbean islands and Canada. In 2000, total exports amounted to a record 12,480t, as against 6,836t and 7,928t for the previous two years.
