kalecot

The kalecot is an apricot-brassica cross

The latest hybrid fruit to hit the shelves could capitalise on growing demand for so-called superfoods among increasingly health-conscious, yoga-loving consumers, the Fresh Produce Journal has learned.

Dubbed the kalecot, the green-skinned stonefruit cultivar is a new strain of apricot containing beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C and calcium, as well as sulforaphane, a compound known for its strong anti-cancer properties–all of which are more commonly found in varieties of brassica.

The fruit also boasts higher-than-normal levels of ascetic acid, known to aid muscle recovery among yoga participants, as well as high levels of a substance scientists refer to as 'goop' – a sciolism sequestrant known to decline sharply in people who have recently undergone a post-modernist separation from a co-parent.

'In developing this new superfruit, we've consciously tried to couple the best traits from some of the most popular apricot varieties – texture, taste and so on – with the most attractive characteristics associated with green vegetables, such as how fashionable they are and how popular they make you among high-flying trendy types,' explained Milo Xylotoof the Frankfurt Institute of Science and Horticulture.

The kalecots are set to go on sale in the UK this week, priced at £4.99 for a punnet of three.
