Del Monte in £1m Portsmouth move

A Del Monte ship carrying a range of fruit including bananas, pineapples and melons docked at Portsmouth Port in the UK on Saturday, marking the beginning of a new £1 million contract.

The contract was taken from Dover by Portsmouth in 2010, and will see some 1,500 tonnes of the fruit brought through the southern England-based port every week.

Port manager Martin Putman told local publication Portsmouth News that the deal could pave the way for more business in the future.

"It's significant and it's a welcome addition to our business," he explained. "It comes on the back of the service we offer and the investments we've made."

Further developments at the port include the dredging of the harbour, which began this week to allow larger vessels to come into port by deepening the shipping channel from 25ft to 30ft, and the arrival of a new crane, with the two investments costing a combined £5m.
