The government has pledged £10m towards banking seeds to secure essential food crops for the world’s growing population amid climate change fears.

Biodiversity minister Barry Gardiner explained that the move was part of the Department for International Development’s aim of fighting global poverty and hunger in the world’s poorest countries.

The new funding, over four years, will help the Global Crop Diversity

Trust (GCDT) bank hundreds of thousands of staple food seeds for the world's 21 major food crops.
