Nottinghamshire carrot co-operative Freshgro is hoping to capture the imagination of young Chantenay carrot lovers with Tiny C, the world’s first carrot super-hero.
Tiny C will feature in a new kids section on the co-operative’s Chantenay carrot website, which features news on Chantenay carrots, nutritional facts and seasonal recipes devised by TV chef Rachel Green.
The new web pages, found at www.chantenay.co.uk/tinyc/, have been created to appeal to children aged four upwards and offer them the chance to learn more about Chantenay carrots in a colourful, fun and interactive way.
It teaches children how Chantenay carrots are grown with the help of Tiny C. It also features creative activities including colour-in sheets of Tiny C, a downloadable counting carrot mobile and even a carrot muffin recipe to cook with mum.
Freshgro said the addition of the kids’ web pages marks its further commitment to the School Fruit & Vegetable Scheme. As part of the
5 A DAY programme, all UK schoolchildren aged four to six are given carrots once a week and the North West and East Midlands regions are allocated Chantenay carrots.
Freshgro said the resource will help children understand why carrots are important to them.
Nigel Pell of Freshgro said: “Chantenay carrots are making a huge comeback, and not just with adults. Kids love this variety due to its size and flavour, small enough to fit into little hands and naturally sweet to taste.
“The British Carrot Growers Association recently commissioned a survey that revealed 53 per cent of children in the UK chose carrots as their favourite vegetable.”
Children will also learn about Chantenay through school visits, educational packs and class talks.
