Brussels sprouts: 80g of the festive veg is allowed in the M&S lunch

Marks & Spencer has used fresh produce as the key to its price-busting Christmas lunch, in a bid to reconnect with its shoppers.

M&S has been criticised for losing touch with its customers amid reports of £70 turkeys and other expensive festive food.

However, it has announced a stylish ‘credit crunch Christmas lunch’ for just £12.25 a head, as reported in the Daily Mail.

The meal, which includes a pre-basted turkey joint and cheap Bucks Fizz, includes four vegetables - potatoes, parsnips and carrots - and the traditional helping of Brussels sprouts.

M&S has allocated a generous 80g of Brussels sprouts to each dinner, which also includes a Christmas pudding at £2.87 a portion.

It is aiming to seriously rival the budget supermarkets that have reportedly claimed some of their custom in recent years.

M&S has slashed prices on many products, offering two-for-one deals at the same time as introducing a range of lower price products.

This announcement follows reports of disappointing profits in the M&S food department.

Marks & Spencer chairman Sir Stuart Rose said: “We have seen some of our customers saying to us, ‘Look, we still love your food, but we're finding life's a bit tough. Please, can you help us?’ And that's what we have to do.

“We don't want to compete deep down and dirty as I call it in terms of quality stance. I believe people out there do want quality. Our job is to make that quality affordable,” he said.
