A grape-tasting apple from the United States has proved a big hit with shoppers in the UK.

The fruit, called a Grapple, gets its distinctive flavour through using a secret process. Mature Washington apples are immersed for several days in a marinade, which apparently creates the taste of Concord grapes.

The Grapple’s sweet flavour and juicy texture has enabled growers in the US to market them as a way of encouraging children to eat more fruit and so help combat obesity.

The fruit went on sale in the UK earlier this month at Roys of Wroxham.

The supermarket in the Norfolk town was offered a delivery of the fruit by a wholesaler that supplies American air bases in the region.

Carol Lane, marketing controller at Roys, said: “We almost sold out in the first week and the rest soon went after more people heard about them.

“Kids love them because they are very juicy and sweet. They also smell a bit like bubble gum.”

The supermarket is planning to order more of the fruit, which cost £2.99 for four.
