An Edinburgh community has mounted a hefty petition after their council banned a local shopkeeper from keeping a fruit and vegetable display outside his shop front.

Council officials have decided to review guidelines that prevent greengrocer Joe Hussain from using a traditional fresh produce display after nearly 300 shoppers signed an appeal against the decision.

The ban was issued on the grounds that the display was in violation of road traffic laws, which ensures pavements are kept clear.

But Hussain, who has been trading for 18 years, started the appeal, claiming that the stands’ removal would result in him losing thousands of pounds worth of custom.

The review will go before the executive in February and the final decision will affect greengrocers using fruit and vegetable displays across the city.
