Colombian banana production is forecast to fall by eight to 10 per cent this year due largely to the impact of inclement weather, Americafruit reports.
Production has been affected in general across the main producing region of Urabá, according to Colombian grower-exporter Banacol.
“Usually, production increases in second half of the year, above all between September and November,” María Uribe Jiménez explained.
“This year, however, the production peak isn’t as pronounced as last year, partly because of the climate and partly because some companies took measures to reduce excessive production in these months.”
With exports also down from Ecuador and Colombia, Banacol anticipates more sustainable prices on the market during the second half of the year.
