Christmas spud demand higher than expected

Forecast snow is unlikely to have any knock-on effects to the potato category in the coming weeks, following a strong performance over the festive period.

Rob Burrow, market information officer at the British Potato Council, told FPJ that the category had fared well over Christmas, with better demand then expected.

He said: “Demand was higher than anticipated in the bagged category and there was improved interest in high-quality white varieties in the packing sector, for bold Estima in particular.

“Snow forecast this week will not make an impact because, in the main, stores are well protected from cold conditions. There could be an impact in terms of movement of the product if transport routes are affected but, overall, I expect there will be very few consequences for the potato sector.”

Prices are steady from before Christmas and few price fluctuations are predicted this month.
