The Chilean kiwifruit industry is to concentrate on producing ripe and ready-to-eat produce for the UK market, following research by the Chilean Kiwifruit Committee (CKC) on what consumers want.
Christian Carvajal of Chilean Exporters’ Association Asoex said at the Chilean Fresh Fruit Association’s first trade journalist workshop in London last week: “The committee was set up to answer the new market conditions we are facing and make sure Chile can compete in a better way.
“Europe has always been a main market and we can improve our presence there with an improved eating experience. Some of our product has been harvested too early and arrives at the market as hard as a rock... The CKC has recognised the inconsistency and is looking to improve in the long term."
