Chile looks to grow fresh produce potential

Suzanne Duvall, director of the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) addressed the International Round Table Business Conference in Santiago stating there is enormous potential for Chile to supply plenty more fresh produce to the United States.

But first growers need to understand the changing demands and trends. She said: “The population of the United States is getting more obese. Also the population is getting more diverse in ethical terms, so there are changing tastes. Furthermore the population is ageing.”

Duvall explains that the Hispanic community is the largest growing minority in the US. She said: “This minority eat a great deal of fruit and vegetables and could be a key area for future business.”

There is also an increase in organic products, which could be a growth area in future years. “Most consumers believe organic food is better for their health. Consumers need motivation to produce something different,” she said. “It is important that growers, exporters and retailers work together.”
