Britain’s place in Europe feels a little more precarious this week with David Cameron’s plan for a referendum on the UK’s role within the EU.

It’s a pity Britain’s position on the international stage is being undermined at a time when fresh produce companies are working harder than ever to improve the nation’s standing.

At Fruit Logistica in Berlin, a record number of British companies will be exhibiting, while a combined stand between the CHA, HDC and Potato Council ushers in a new era of collaboration. A first-ever British reception at the show will underline an impressive promotional push.

It’s great to see such a presence at a time when the economy and weather are combining to make life very difficult and the temptation could be to save every cost possible.

If we’re going to get out of this recession and convince the world to invest in Britain and trade with our businesses, getting out there, working closer together and being a part of Europe and the wider world is surely the way to go.
