Solanum, a member of the Produce World Group, has added to the new fresh potato brand Cyprus Gold to its portfolio destined for Waitrose.
The company hopes to address the fall off in popularity of the Cypriot potato which it believes held a prominent position within the UK market in the 1990s before the drop-off.
Solunam is now aiming to re-introduce the rich heritage of the Cyprus potatoes to a new generation of UK consumers.
Laura Brown-Waite, sales director at Solanum, explained why they had developed the brand. She said: “Increasingly consumers are demanding to know the provenance of their potatoes, which is becoming as important as the taste. As the leading supplier of provenance potatoes to the UK market this was an obvious opportunity to champion.
“The Cyprus potato season starts harvesting around eight weeks earlier than the UK, which means that we are able to provide ‘best in season’ eating quality during June and July. Cyprus Gold is grown specifically for its golden brown skin, buttery taste and fluffy texture, making it the ideal choice for baking, roasting or as jacket potatoes for summer barbecues.”
Cyprus Gold will be available between June and August in 2kg bags at an RSP £2.69 in Waitrose branches and online through Ocado.
