Edwin Booth, chairman North West retailer Booths, has received an honorary degree from the University of Lancaster in recognition of his achievements as a highly successful local businessman.

Edwin Booth received his LLD (Doctor of Laws) on 13 July, during university graduation ceremonies for undergraduates, from the university Chancellor Sir Christian Bonington CVO CBE DL.

Booths was founded in 1847 by Edwin Henry Booth and has been owned by the Booths family ever since. Under Edwin Booth’s leadership, the regional supermarket chain has expanded greatly and the company now employs more than 3,000 staff in its 26 branches.

In 2005, Edwin Booth was awarded the Business in the Community (BITC) Prince of Wales Ambassador Award for the North West, in recognition of his leadership and positive impact on the community. In 2007, he was chair of BITC’s The Prince’s Seeing is Believing Alumni North West Board.

Nick Fragel, director of alumni and development at Lancaster University, said: “As an influential business leader, Edwin has championed the rights of local SMEs and the farming community for many years. He has helped to make Booths a watchword for quality, without sacrificing the company’s strong commitment to the North West. Edwin is also recognised in this award for his work with the Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) and the Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC).”

Fragel added: “We will be delighted to maintain our strong relationship with Edwin over the coming years and hope that Lancaster students will continue to benefit from interacting with him.”

Lancaster University gives out eight honorary degrees a year, to people with a recognised international standing in their field of endeavour, or to those of high distinction who have given special service in connection with the university or its regions.
