Bradford-based environmental project Bees Urban Wildlife Project (BUWP) has received nearly £10,000 from the Big Lottery Fund's £1 million Breathing Places scheme.
And this cash injection has come at the right time as the University of Bradford, which leases land to the YMCA project, had sold part of the plot to extend the BUWP portion.
Project co-ordinator Julia Pearson said: “It’s just right next door, now instead of a long garden it’s a square patch.”
“It's important we concentrate on the urban area.”
The funds will also be used to improve the wildflower meadow at the reserve and develop a management plan.
Apple juice was flowing at the Apple Day garden party, held on October 14, at the Bowling Park Community Orchard, Bradford, to celebrate the Lottery funding. The event allowed people to watch demonstrations of how best to prune apple trees, and a range of apples not normally sold in shops was also on sale.
