Cornfest 2006

Barfoots of Botley will hold its biannual event Cornfest, which celebrates local sweetcorn in Sussex, on September 6, in Pagham near Chichester.

The event, which will take place from 11am to 4pm at Sefter Farm, is expected to attract 2,500 people and will include a local farmers’ market, barbecued sweetcorn on the cob, farm tours, pony rides and games for all the family. Local MP Nick Gibb will open Cornfest and its proceeds will be donated to local charities.

The company first held Cornfest in 2003 and believes that it is beneficial to both the local community and the sweetcorn season. Graham Young, managing director for Barfoots, said: “The festival has received a great deal of support from the local community and Barfoots likes to put this on for the local people. It is a social event and it gives Barfoots’ employees an opportunity to bond with each another, as well as bonding the business with the community.”

The vegetable grower has also started to supply Tesco’s store in Hampshire, Sussex and the Isle of Wight with local sweetcorn. Barfoots’ contribution to Tesco’s organic line of sweetcorn in its Hampshire stores has been labelled ‘Grown in Hampshire’ for the last three weeks, and Sussex-grown product, which was introduced into the local area’s stores in August, also features a similar Sussex-themed brand.
