Aviko wedged in value

Francisca Bollema, brand manager at Aviko, one of the leading manufacturers of frozen and chilled chips and potato products, recognises the importance of bringing added value to the potato category. This is also reflected in Aviko’s extensive product portfolio, which spans chips, under the Aviko and Lord Chips brands, through to Aviko’s more innovative Mega Wedges and Quiche d’Alsace.

Bollema is aware that time-efficiency in a kitchen is vital for chefs and explains that chilled and frozen potato products can help reduce preparation time. “Rather than peeling, chipping and blanching the potatoes themselves, Aviko’s products come ready-prepared, which saves valuable time that can be devoted to other things such as cooking more portions,” she says. This also results in cost savings to the caterer, in relation to the reduction in the amount of kitchen staff needed to prepare the potatoes, adds Bollema.

Aviko says that its “unique, new Steamfresh range is revolutionary, using cutting-edge processing technology to steam potatoes rather than boil them, locking-in taste, nutrition and vitamins to create a healthier pre-prepared potato range. Made from 100 per cent pure potato with no additives they require minimal cooking time and provide a superior, natural flavour”.

And Bollema adds that contemporary potato products can often be more suitable for multiple meal applications such as starters, mains, sandwich sides or on combo-platters. “This is particularly true of Aviko’s Mega Wedges which recently took silver at the British Frozen Food Federation Awards in the catering sector ‘Best New Accompaniment/Potato/Vegetable Product’ in June.

“Furthermore,” she says, “Aviko’s total chain control - from seed to plate - is characteristic of an area that is becoming more important in terms of provenance, reliability, HACCP controls and product traceability and is further evidence of our commitment to bringing added value to potatoes.”
