Asda workers call five-day strike

According to national media reports, Asda distribution workers will stage a five-day strike from June 30, in a protest over pay and bargaining rights.

Further to this story’s article on freshinfo, lorry drivers and warehouse staff at 20 distribution depots around the UK have agreed strike dates with the GMB Union after almost three quarters of those who voted in a ballot backed a walkout.

Asda will do all it can to limit the disruption the strike will cause to its store network.

"Two-thirds of our depot workers are not GMB members and we expect most of them to come to work," said an Asda spokesperson. The GMB claims that closer to 60 per cent of Asda’s depot staff are members. The supermarket chain has been working on contingency plans for some time.

The depot sites include Bedford, Chepstow, Dartford, Didcot, Erith, Falkirk, Grangemouth, Ince George in Wigan, Lymedale Staffordshire, Lutterworth in Leicestershire, Portbury in Bristol, Skelmersdale, Teesport, Wakefield, and Washington.
