Asda launched the Wilja potato into its stores this week.
The long oval variety, which was first grown in the late 1960s, has a yellow skin and pale yellow flesh.
It is widely regarded as one of the best culinary varieties from recent introductions, according to the retailer.
Asda potato buyer Drew Kirk said: “Welcome back to Britain’s much loved, favourite potato. With its earthy flavour and versatile usage, this potato is truly a season’s best.”
Chambers Farming Group is one of the growers who are producing the Wilja potatoes for Fenmarc Produce.
David Chambers is a third generation potato grower who has been growing potatoes for over 30 years. He said: “The Wilja potato is full of flavour, with a truly traditional potato taste and texture.”
The variety boils well and suits all cooking requirements, but is particularly suited to chipping and baking potatoes.
Wilja potatoes are available in a 2kg pack until March 2008.
