Asda relaunched its traditional potato pack this week, featuring five old-style varieties that date back to the 19th century.

The British Queen, Up to Date and Majestic varieties, which were first developed in 1894, are among the traditional varieties now in store.

These were grown widely in allotments and back gardens across the UK to feed the population during World War II.

The other traditional varieties available in the packs are Catriona and Red Duke of York.

Asda potato buyer Drew Kirk said: “It’s that time of the year again for the traditional spud. Following the success of last year, we will be introducing more varieties to capture the heritage of the traditional garden. These varieties are famous for flavour and great examples of how potatoes used to taste. The traditional offer gives the customer something truly different.”

Agrimarc is growing the traditional varieties on behalf of Fenmarc Produce.

Nigel Allam at Agrimarc said: “The eye-catching appeal of Catriona is sure to attract the most discerning customer; whilst the superb flavour and cooking qualities of Red Duke of York will grace any dinner table. Red Duke of York is fantastic roasted or oven-baked in oil.”

The traditional packs are available at Asda stores until March.
