Asda has responded to the criticism of its pricing policies by NFU president Peter Kendall.
A spokesperson told freshinfo: “Peter Kendall's concerns are misplaced. Our relationships with farmers are as strong today as they were back in 1965 when we were first established by a group of dairy farmers here in Yorkshire.
“But he's absolutely right that low prices are part of our DNA and always will be.
“The reason is simple, our research shows that the average Asda family only has £146 left each month after paying all the bills. That's why we're determined to keep our prices low and save our customers money.
“However we will not do this at any cost and will continue to pay our dedicated farmers more while increasing the amount of local produce we source.”
