Asda has been named the cheapest place to buy Christmas dinner, as it slashes prices in the run-up to the festive period.

According to price comparison website MySupermarket.com, Asda is charging £72.97 for 25 key seasonal products, £8 cheaper than Tesco and £9 cheaper than Sainsbury’s, the Telegraph reports.

The basket contained sprouts and parsnips, along with cranberry sauce, Dundee cake, mince pies, custard, an advent calendar and a bottle of brandy.

The retailers have already entered into their traditional Christmas price war, as shoppers usually spend twice the amount they normally would in the week before Christmas. Food inflation means competition is particularly hot this year.

James Flower, an analyst at Verdict research, said that despite the credit crunch, there will be no evident slowdown in consumer spend this Christmas.

“There is a ‘it happens just once a year’ mentality from shoppers,” he said. “Customers are likely to push the boat out this year, even if that means spending extra on their credit cards.”
