Garden Organic will be championing the cause of the British apple by holding two ‘Apple Days’ to alert the public to the number of varieties available.

The first day, to be held at the charity’s kitchen garden at Audley End, will take place on September 30, where visitors can taste different varieties of apples, and expert gardeners will be on hand to give advice and information on growing your own apples.

The second day will be held at Garden Organic Ryton on October 7. Visitors will be able to taste and buy different varieties of apples, as well as buy trees of some unusual varieties. There will also be talks, advice and information on apple growing, plus apple recipes and cider-tasting. For kids, there will be games such as ‘The Longest Apple Peel’ and the enticingly named ‘Spot the Maggot’.

Bob Sherman, the charity’s director of gardens and gardening, said: “Nothing could be more scrumptious than biting into an apple straight from the tree but many supermarkets only stock a very limited range. We want to show people how many flavours are out there and how easy they can be to grow.” l
