Anya: unique appearance

Anya: unique appearance

Sainsbury’s, in conjunction with one of its key potato suppliers MBM Produce Ltd, will be holding a two-week in-store promotional tour to herald the start of the new season of its exclusive potato varieties Anya and Juliette.

Starting on September 6, the tour will cover eight stores across the main Anya and Juliette growing areas of Cornwall, Devon, Norfolk and Lincolnshire. Sampling will commence at 11am and close at 6pm each day.

On hand to create potato recipes for customers to sample and try at home will be Chef Noel, a retail demonstration specialist who “creates an atmosphere in store that is unrivalled within the retail industry”. Chef Noel and MBM personnel will answer customer’s questions on Anya, Juliette and potatoes in general.

Anya is a distinctively flavoured gourmet potato, bred on the banks of the river Tay just outside Dundee. “Its unique appearance and taste are a result of a cross between the knobbly Pink Fur Apple and Desiree potatoes. Lord Sainsbury’s own gardener grew the new variety for the first time in 1995 and liked it so much he suggested it be called Anya after Lady Sainsbury,” said MBM’s Graham Nicholls.

Juliette is a delicately flavoured gourmet potato, bred in France but now widely grown in the UK. “Although similar in appearance to other salad potato varieties, Juliette has a superior taste, combining a firm texture and delicate flavour perfectly,” said Nicholls.

Both varieties are supplied exclusively to Sainsbury’s by MBM.
