Spanish exporter Anecoop announced a successful year in the 2002-03 season at is agm last month.

A leader in its sector, the Valencia based co-operative organisation saw a four per cent increase in volume turnover and a seven per cent hike in value to €400 million over the previous year.

Highlights were the vegetables and salads category which set a new record rising by 13 per cent in volume to 110,000 tonnes. Citrus also performed well experiencing a six per cent rise.

These two sectors helped compensate for a poor performance by stone fruit and persimmon, which were struck by late spring frosts. Anecoop’s Bouquet seedless watermelon really made the summer for the company as production flourished and exceptional temperatures around Europe boosted demand.

The company is now working on advancing its melon offer through its own research station to develop different coloured fruit as well as mini-watermelons and reducing the average size of Bouquet.
