Andean Sunrise launched at Asda

Asda introduced a potato variety that can hold its own in a microwave into its range this week.

Andean Sunrise, which has a distinctive deep yellow to orange flesh and rich flavour, is being grown by Agrimarc for Fenmarc Produce.

Nigel Allam at Agrimarc said: “The peach-like flesh colour of Andean Sunrise is much like the colours seen in orange peppers, with the potatoes family origins linked to the original pureness of Peruvian potatoes. The visually striking colour of the potato is maintained with microwave cooking and roasting.”

Asda potato buyer Drew Kirk added: “The Andean Sunrise diploid potato is something different for the consumer. This tuber has origins from one of the oldest civilisations in the world. It has been bred for the UK market to deliver a very consistent eating quality and claims to cook around 30 per cent quicker then conventional potatoes due to a smaller cell structure. With a very bright and attractive flesh colour, it will brighten the plate at every meal.”

The variety will be available in 1kg packs in Asda stores up until Christmas.
