Aldi has described May as its best-ever month, with shoppers switching from dearer supermarket rivals as a result of the credit crunch, according to Thisismoney.co.uk.

According to an article on the website from the Financial Mail, sales at the discount grocery chain rose by more than 30 per cent in May compared with the year-earlier period, well ahead of the store’s average growth rate of 20 per cent in the past two years.

UK managing director Paul Foley said: “The current economic crisis is giving people a jolt. This is not just taxi drivers moaning about the cost of living. This is affecting everyone across all classes.”

Aldi now has around 400 stores. Foley estimates that the German chain’s prices undercut its competitors by as much as a third.
