Airfreighted salad volumes soar

BA World Cargo has seen its throughput of salad crops for the UK market rise by four times the weekly volume year-on-year in the last six weeks.

The Spanish weather problems has caused a big shortage of lettuce, and the BAWC Heathrow Perishables Handling Centre has been handling 200 tonnes more airfreighted iceberg a week than at the same time last year.

“Our customers have to have iceberg in particular for their lettuce mixes and we have handled a huge amount of product from the US, for instance, said Matt George, general manager, Temperature Controlled Services for Christian Salvesen, who manages the Heathrow centre. “It has caused a huge spike in demand, but we have the capacity to deal with it.”
