Sweet Sensation pears grown at East Malling

Fresh produce supplier AG Thames has confirmed a return to profit in its annual results for 2012.The firm, which supplies fruit to several UK supermarkets, announced consolidated pre-tax profits of £1.6 million for the year.

Meanwhile, subsidiaries Chingford Fruit and CPM (Retail), both achieved respective pre-tax profits of £2.2m and £518,000.

Leon Aichen, Chairman of AG Thames, said the business had bounced back after the group suffered a £4.9 million pre-tax loss in 2011.

He said: “We’re pleased to be reporting a return to profit, following a difficult year. It has been an encouraging 12 months for our entire group, with current trading continuing to meet expectations.'

Aichen pinpointed innovation in variety development and the launch of domestically grown varieties such as Sweet Sensation pears as positive areas for the Crayford-based business.

He concluded: “Our relationships with key customers and suppliers remain very strong as we work with them to enhance consumer demand via our long-term sustainable supply commitment, and we look forward to remaining on track forthe year ahead.'
