Aalsmeer admits 100th international member

The world marketplace for flowers and plants Bloemenveiling Aalsmeer in Holland has admitted its 100th international member.

Suera Flowers Ltd, a Kenyan business owned by the Mureithi family, and one of the largest suppliers of roses and zantedeschia at the flower auction, is the latest company to join.

Erastus Mureithi also represents Kenyan growers as chairman of the Kenya Flower Council.

Suppliers based outside the European Union have been eligible for membership of Bloemenveiling Aalmeer since Januaray 1.

The hundred growers who have so far chosen to become members of the Bloemenveiling Aalsmeer come from countries including Israel, Turkey, Uganda, Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania and Ethiopia.

The auction expects the number of foreign members to grow to 130 this year, with a turnover of €150 million a year.

Bloemenveiling Aalsmeer is the first auction co-operative to welcome members from all over the world.
