Cut fresh herbs grower and importer R&G Stevens moved closer to automating its packing process this month, with the end of phase one of a £1 million project due to be completed by November.

The temperature-controlled premises on its nursery in Surrey are being expanded and modernised with specially adapted machinery, which is shortly to be delivered.

Partner Mathew Prestwich said this will allow for a substantial increase in throughput, beyond the current 10m units produced annually. The project incorporates increased chill space, staff facilities and an office linked to an integrated computer network.

The modernisation programme is a response to customers' needs, but there are no plans to increase production. Stevens grows 14 acres of herbs ñ both protected and outdoor ñ on its own and rented land from March to September. Together with imports, mainly from the Mediterranean, it provides around 26 types for the retail trade.

Prestwich added that the development will allow the company to develop new packs and concepts.
