As takeover awaits green light, company plans drive towards more sustainable, outsourced logistics model
Dutch fresh produce company The Greenery has entrusted all of its transport operations in the Netherlands and abroad to logistics specialist AB Texel as it looks to focus on its core business of fresh produce supply.
Announcing the new move, the group said the planned partnership would follow the AB Texel’s planned takeover of its subsidiary Dijco International Transport Company.
Arthur Swijter, CFO of The Greenery, said the change was part of a broader strategy called Focus25, which aims to create maximum value for growers and customers by focusing the business on its core activities.
“The partnership enables The Greenery to fully focus on its core tasks, the cultivation and sale of fruit and vegetables from its growers, while AB Texel uses its expertise to realise an efficient and sustainable transport chain,” he explained.
“In addition, we support our sustainability goals by jointly focusing on innovative and environmentally friendly logistics solutions.”
That sustainability drive is expected to involve a switch to hydrotreated vegetable oil to fuel its vehicles, as it attempts to lower carbon dioxide emissions and make its supply chains more environmentally friendly.
AB Texel itself continues to invest in a more sustainable fleet and further digitalisation. “We look forward to using our logistics expertise for The Greenery and thus building a more sustainable and efficient food chain together,” said Dennis Wetenkamp, the company’s CEO.
“The collaboration is in line with our strategy to help partners in the chain to realise their ambitions in a sustainable way, with economies of scale and network, expertise and data as the key to success.”
The company’s proposed takeover of Dijco – which includes Dijco’s employees, customer base and fleet – must first be approved by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets.
