Dutch state secretary Sharon Dijksma demonstrated her support for the Save Our Soils campaign at this week's BioFach organic fair in Nuremberg, Germany.
The principle message of the campaign, initiated by Dutch organic specialist Nature & More, is that consumers can help save soils by choosing organically grown food.
'Consumers want more and more products that are produced with attention to animal welfare, nature and the environment,' said Dijksma as she unveiled the Save Our Soils logo.
Indeed, statistics just released by the Dutch organic sector showed that exports rose by 11 per cent last year to €928m.
'Soils are the foundation of our existence,' said Volkert Engelsman, CEO of Nature & More. He also suggested that organics were the solution.
'There is plenty of evidence that organic preserves and enriches soil,' he said, 'even though there may also be other ways to save soils. Become a ‘soilmate’! Anyone can become a friend of the soil, by making conscious choices as a consumer.'
2015 is the United Nations International Year of Soils. The year also marks the 25th anniversary of Eosta, the Dutch organic firm behind the Nature & More 'trace & tell' trademark.
