Hamburg-based fresh fruit importer Port International was declared a winner at the recent Sustainability Heroes Awards 2021, a digital conference organised by DQS CFS (German Association for Sustainability) and DGQ (German Association for Quality).
The award, created in 2015 and presented annually, honours pioneers in the field of sustainability. Port triumphed in the 'Carbon Footprint' category, competing against several other notable companies.
Prizes were awarded in a total of six categories to the best companies selected from over 200 applications, submitted by start-ups, medium-sized companies and large corporations.
Independent sustainability experts evaluated the applications from a wide range of industries such as food, cosmetics and technology.
Port International impressed the jury with Be Climate, the first brand for climate-neutral fruit and vegetables, and its work in the field of organic and Fairtrade products.
The company itself has been carbon neutral since 2017. Currently, it is working intensively on reduction measures along the entire supply chain and on achieving the self-set target of reducing its emissions by 50 per cent by 2030 (compared to 2018).
'We are delighted to receive this award,' said managing director Mike Port. 'It confirms that being courageous and breaking new ground is well worth the effort.
'Our motivation is strong to continue standing up for climate protection – fruitful climate protection,' Port added.
