Importer strengthens its collaboration with Peruvian producers specialising in organic and Fairtrade bananas for the European market
Port International has announced that it has expanded its Exclusive Partner Programme in Peru.
According to Port, the selected Peruvian producers specialise in the cultivation of organic and Fairtrade bananas for the European market.
”For more than two decades, Port International has been importing bananas from Peru, valuing the country’s high-quality standards,” the group stated. ”The bananas from Peru are known for their particularly careful production, which results in minimal imperfections.
”The proximity of the cultivation areas to the port of Paita – all bananas reach the port within a maximum of 1.5 hours – further contributes to the excellent quality of the products.
”What makes Peruvian banana production special is the large number of small-scale producers who cultivate bananas on a total area of over 750 hectares,” the group outlined.
”More than 700 smallholders manage an average of just 1ha of land each, overseeing the entire production process with great dedication and expertise. This sustainable farming method is 100 per cent organically certified and almost exclusively Fairtrade-certified.”
The Chira Valley and particularly the Sullana region offered ideal soil and climate conditions for the cultivation of organic bananas, Port confirmed.
To meet the high-quality standards of its customers, Port International has established its own quality team in Peru.
The seven team members oversee the entire production process, evaluate farms, and optimise the packing process, ensuring that only the best quality products make their way to European customers.
According to Port, the expansion of the Exclusive Partner Programme in Peru marked another step in its long-standing collaboration with Peruvian producers.
This exclusive partnership offers producers planning security and enables Port International to provide a product that is available exclusively through the company.
In addition, the long-term support from Port International had ”significantly contributed” to the development of agricultural conditions in the region, it said.
“Only through long-term partnerships can sustainable changes and successes be achieved,” said Karlsson Port, managing director of Port International Bananas.
”Our Exclusive Partner Programme is an excellent example of a successful collaboration that benefits all parties involved.”
