Dutch companies launch Sonrosa, a seed-bred berry that reportedly grows in just 16 weeks
The Netherlands’ largest fruit grower cooperative Fruitmasters has unveiled Sonrosa, a new brand identity for what it calls a “hybrid strawberry of the future”.
The product is certainly different in terms of its provenance. Developed in partnership with agricultural research company Limgroup, Sonrosa is bred from seeds – unlike the majority of strawberries on the market, which are derived from clones.
This method is said to shorten the growth cycle dramatically: instead of two years, a Sonrosa plant can apparently grow from seed in just 16 weeks.
The berry is also said to combine exceptional taste, consistent quality and a minimal ecological footprint. The first commercial crop will be available in early 2025.
According to Fruitmasters, climate change and shifts to other varieties have influenced the production and availability of strawberries in recent years.
“A pioneering group of breeders, plant growers, growers and sales cooperatives has paved the way for a transition in strawberry cultivation,” it commented.
“The introduction of the seed-bred Sonrosa marks an important milestone in the sector and a major step forward in making the strawberry chain more sustainable.”
