Packaging federation tells Fruit Logistica audience that lightweight, wooden packaging is most sustainable material for fresh produce
Spanish wooden packaging federation Fedemco used its recent appearance at Fruit Logistica 2025 to promote the sustainable credentials of lightweight, wooden packaging.
“We’re here to show the world’s fresh produce leaders that wooden packaging is their ideal choice for an industry seeking responsible and competitive solutions,” said Fedemco’s managing director Emilio Pérez. “Our forests do much more than just provide wood: they secure our future.”
Speaking on the event’s Fresh Produce Forum stage, the federation’s international coordinator Elena Postolov drew attention to the results of a Polytechnic University of Valencia life-cycle assessment, which put wood ahead of cardboard when assessed according to various sustainability metrics.
Those measurements included water consumption, marine and freshwater pollution, soil acidification, and global warming potential.
And the study also pointed to the fact that wood is fully recyclable and biodegradable. With new EU packaging regulations set to limit the use of plastic for fresh fruit and vegetables by 2030, Europe’s wooden packaging industry is naturally keen to promote its own materials as the most sustainable.
As the current president of Grow International, a network of wooden packaging federations from France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain, Fedemco is leading that charge. “We are strengthening our efforts to cooperate with other European federations,” Pérez added.
“We see this collaboration as crucial to make a real impact on our society. The future of our planet is at stake and we all can contribute towards a better future.”
