Consum, the Valencia-based supermarket chain, has once again come out in support of the region’s citrus growers this season.
It has pledged to sell only oranges and mandarins bearing the Cítricos Valencianos (Valencian Citrus) PGI from the end of November to the end of April, climate and supply permitting.
The retailer will buy a total of 5,500 tonnes of Valencia-grown Navelina, Navel and Navelate and Lane Late oranges and Clemenrubi, Oronules, Clemenules, Clemenvilla and Ortanique mandarins this season, 10 per cent more than in 2020/21.
This week, the quality seal once again took part in Valencia Breakfast Week, an initiative in which cafés, bars and restaurants in the Valencia province give out more than 10,000 free orange juices in order to promote the industry.
José Enrique Sanz, the PGI’s managing director, said: “this event is an important part of Valencia’s gastronomic calendar, bringing together 53 cafes, bars and restaurants in the province with the aim of promoting the regional breakfast”.
