The Assembly of European Horticultural Regions (Areflh) will hold a conference on the future of agriculture in Valencia next month as it celebrates its 25th anniversary
The Assembly of European Horticultural Regions (Areflh) is gearing up to mark its 25th anniversary in the Spanish region of Valencia with a public conference on 3 April. Held as part of the Areflh General Assembly, the event is set to reflect on the organisation’s achievements and look ahead to the future of European agriculture and horticulture.
The conference, hosted in collaboration with the Generalitat Valenciana and the Cultural Centre del Carme, includes discussions of three critical topics: the European Commission’s Vision for the Future of Agriculture and Food, the reform of National Strategic Plans and the Common Market Organisation (CMO) regulations, and addressing the challenges of water resilience in the fruit and vegetables sector.
Industry professionals, institutional representatives and experts will gather to explore these pressing issues, with the event available both in-person and online for maximum accessibility.
In addition to the conference, Areflh’s Annual General Meeting will take place in the morning, where Simona Caselli and Jean-Louis Moulon will step down after three terms as president and vice-president, with new leaders being appointed for the next three years.
Concerning the venue, Areflh pointed out that the Valencia region was the leading producer of lemons in Spain (supplying almost half of total production) and the second largest producer of plants and flowers.
“In 2022, the Valencian agri-food sector was the third largest in Spain, behind Andalusia and Catalonia,” it stated. “It generated €10.7bn in Gross Value Added (GVA), or 10.8 per cent of the Valencian economy. The event will thus provide an opportunity for representatives of the region and professionals to talk about the challenges of rebuilding after the floods at the end of 2024.”
