Australia’s retail and food service industry are being treated to a new apple from April to June.
The sweet Greenstar apple is high in vitamin C, which prevents it from browning after being cut, making it ideal for salads, fruit platters and kids’ school lunches.
A newer variety to Australia, recently planted orchards across Australia are coming into production, with the fruit to be marketed as ‘fresh off the tree’ during its short season, according to Produce Marketing Australia.
One of the challenges of marketing the Greenstar apple is distinguishing it from Granny Smith apples.
Nicole Giblett of Newton Orchards in Manjimup Western Australia said that while Greenstar is a brilliant variety with a lot of untapped potential, the challenge lies in differentiating it from Granny Smith apples.
“Greenstar is such a fantastic variety but needs a lot of point of sale support to demonstrate its points of difference, such as its sweetness and that it naturally stays white,” Giblett told Fruitnet. “Every lunchbox in Australia needs a sliced up Greenstar this autumn – I wish we could figure out how to send it sliced to market.”
Greenstar will be available from leading independent greengrocers, and at some Woolworths stores.
