Costa Group has launched an innovative trial using laser technology to etch images on the skin of its avocados.

During the trial, Costa’s Lovacados with etched Easter characters will appear in 20 Victorian stores during April. Consumers will be asked to provide their feedback on the laser application, by scanning a QR code.

The trial will help Costa understand consumer sentiment towards avocados with lasered images on the skin surface.

The goal ultimately is to replace fruit stickers, which are not recyclable or compostable, with laser-etched bar codes.

Laser is a natural light (no chemicals, no ink) which lifts the top layer of the skin surface and does not impact the flesh of the avocado.

If the consumer feedback is positive, Costa said it hopes to implement a type of bar code which will be lasered onto the surface, eliminating the need for the fruit stickers.
