Grower-owned body Horticulture Innovation Australia (Hort Innovation) has launched its Australian Onions ‘Secret Serve’ campaign to get children eating more onions, without them knowing.
With 94.6 per cent of Australia children between two and 18 not eating the daily recommended serve of vegetables, Hort Innovation marketing lead Graeme Yardy says this campaign will hopefully make it easier for parents to ensure their children are eating enough vegetables.
“Australian children aren’t consuming nearly enough vegetables. Onions can help: they are a versatile, delicious and nutritious vegetable you can add to any meal without the kids even knowing,” Yardy said. “The Secret Serve campaign is designed to show that onions can become a reliable, and hassle-free serve of veg for your children, ensuring they are well nourished without the nightly argument – which we see as a big win!”
The nation-wide campaign will include recipes focusing on creative uses of onions in everyday meals, as well as tips on storing and preparing onions.
A recipe card has been created, with seven ‘Secret Serves’ of onions, including secret spaghetti Bolognese, undercover beef stroganoff and incognito sizzling steak fajitas.
As part of the roll-out, the onion industry has partnered with the Australian mushroom industry on in-store cooking demonstrations at 450 supermarkets and greengrocers across the country.
