Company will be at Fruit Attraction to showcase its 100 per cent biobased and biodegradable products

Following Bio On’s acquisition by Maip Group last year, Zeropack, the sustainable packaging company in which Bio on and Rivoira Group each own a 50 per cent stake, returns to the market with a strengthened strategy that focuses on innovation and sustainability.

At Fruit Attraction 2024 in Madrid (8C19), the company will present its innovative range of products that are 100 per cent biobased and biodegradable in all controlled and uncontrolled environments, from composting to the sea, from soil to rivers.

Approximately 450mn tonnes of plastic are produced worldwide each year, releasing between 27mn and 35mn tonnes into the environment. A significant portion of this pollution comes from the agricultural and horticultural sector, where the use of conventional plastic products, such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and PVC, generates huge amounts of microplastics. These particles, through soil and weathering, penetrate various ecosystems, causing irreparable damage to the environment and the food chain.

“The new EC Directive of 23 October, 2023 imposes strict restrictions on the release of microplastics and identifies a few main areas on which to focus attention, including products used in agriculture,” says Eng. Martini, managing director of Zeropack, along with Marco Rivoira of RK Zero Group. “That is why in this context, Zeropack aims to provide a concrete and sustainable response to this emergency, espousing a vision of pollution-free agriculture. A vision where every crop not only respects, but actively contributes to regenerating the soil and the surrounding environment.”

Zeropack said it is committed to the development and marketing of a diverse range of sustainable agricultural and horticultural products. These products are designed to completely replace fossil-based plastics with biobased and biodegradable alternatives in line with the highest standards of sustainability.

These include new clips made from IamNature, a material based on polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), a natural polyester produced by certain microorganisms through the fermentation of sugars and agricultural waste. This material is fully compostible and biodegradable, eliminating the need for disposal and significantly reduces environmental impact, offering a practical solution to the challenges of plastic pollution and agricultural waste management.

Zeropack represents a concrete response to today’s environmental challenges and a commitment to tomorrow’s sustainability. Choosing Zeropack means choosing agriculture that nourishes, protects and renews nature,” the company said.
