Upmarket retailer Whole Foods Market is planning a big push on avocados in the US and Canada at the end of this week.
The company plans to offer its customers five avocados for US$5, an eye-catching promotion designed to attract consumers who are not so familiar with the fruit.
The campaign will focus mainly on Hass, which is the most common avocado variety sold in the US.
Exporters in Chile, a major supplier to the US market in the second half of the year, are due to begin shipping avocados – mainly Hass – into North America from mid-August until late November.
Earlier this week, the US Hass Avocado Board (HAB) launched Love One Today, a science-based food and health education programme designed to encourage consumers to include fresh Hass avocados in their diets and thereby help increase fruit and vegetable.
The campaign will target female heads of household between the ages of 25-65 who generally have larger families, as well as accomplished cooks who prepare dinner at home at least four times per week and shoppers who visit all store formats during the course of a typical week.
