The Packer has reported that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is creating a new inspection division by merging the Agricultural Marketing Service's Fresh and Processed Products segments.

The merger would ensure that the agency maximises future efficiencies, according to Bob Keeney, deputy administrator for fruit and vegetable programmes for the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service.

He told The Packer that it could take a year for the consolidation to begin, adding that all facets of the branches would be assessed, including finances, accounting and training.
