An event on UK food security and innovation in the food chain was the setting for Martin Brown, managing director of intelligent pest management solution group Exosect, to highlight some of the issues facing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) when bringing innovative and sustainable technology to the UK agricultural sector.

Speaking at the Westminster Food & Nutrition Forum, Brown said that prohibitive regulatory costs and unpredictable regulatory timelines were some of the main barriers that prevented technological advances from being made, at a crucial time when sustainable agriculture and food security are high priorities.

Brown also outlined his belief that the future of the UK economy is dependent on innovation.

'If UK-based innovation companies can't get products to market, it's not just the agricultural sector and food chain that will suffer,' he explained. 'Our future economy is dependent on what the UK can innovate and the intellectual property that we develop.'
